The film, which this morning secured a slot in the Venice Film Festival official lineup, is based on the true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 7. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. Army medic, he single- handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers, and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss also has the distinction of being the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. This film is about the strength of one man’s convictions, the triumph of His will and a man fulfilling that role despite all obstacles, despite being taunted and ridiculed because he knows that something greater than himself is in motion — something that both Gibson and Wallace (who helped on the script) truly understand.
